Welcome Aboard!

Ships were the original means of sending written messages around the world. As with ships, our new enterprise will depend heavily upon its mail cargo for survival. A ship and its crew will not leave port without cargo. Therefore, we of the crew at the Hormel Institute, one of the oldest lipid laboratories still going, are appealing to those other scientists who are concerned about the Essential Fatty Acids to make use of our communication facility, to transport scientific information about the w3 and 6 Essential Fatty Acids around the world in the fastest means currently available. The more you use this communication facility, the more valuable it will become. The price of postage will be the maintenance of your own computer.

Information transported will not be limited to the w3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, because these essentials are related to all other fatty acids which occur with them and to the many lipids in which they occur in biological matter. Relationships between these essential lipids and non-lipid structures and metabolites are also welcome. Relationship is the key word. Information concerning any species of plant, animal or microbe, will be welcome here.

Segregation will not be practiced aboard. First come, first served. Texts offered for publication should be written in clear modern English. The editors reserve the right to edit the language, or not to accept text which is outside the scope of our mandate. Acceptance does not imply editorial agreement with opinions of the authors. Our objective is to transmit information and ideas as quickly as possible. We expect to transport information infinitely faster than by ship!

Our format will evolve as needs arise. We expect to publish invited editorials from time to time. Suggestions will be welcomed by the editors. We expect to add to our information online, from time to time as news reaches us, rather than trying to maintain a schedule. Articles will be dated, the source identified, and an email address should be provided with each article.

The newsletter will be produced by members of the Nutritional Biochemistry Section and the Research Support Personnel of the Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota. The former group is the heir to the Essential Fatty Acid tradition of George and Mildred Burr who reported their discovery of essentiality of polyunsaturated acids, both linoleic (w6) and linolenic (w3) in 1929 and 1930 at the University of Minnesota. The latter group has kept The Hormel Institute up to date electronically for the past 30 years. It was largely responsible for linking the Hormel Institute in Austin to the Internet via the University of Minnesota, and the organization of Southern Minnesota Internet Group (SMIG) which serves our part of the world.

Initiation of this service in January 1997 was made possible by gifts from Hoffman-La Roche and ENRECO. We solicit similar financial help from our other industrial friends, to permit this venture to continue and to grow.
